摘要: | The Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata ) is an important fishery resource
in Taiwan. This study investigated oyster cultures at two locations along the
coast of Taisi Township from March 2012 to July 2014. The average recruitment
density, measured once every two weeks, of the oyster larvae was 256.4
± 236.6 individuals/shell (N 62) at site A and 118.5 ± 140.2 individuals/shell
(N 39) at site B. The average adherence density of the barnacle larvae was
187.1 ± 251.2 individuals/shell (N 60) at site A and 60.9 ± 112.5 individuals/
shell (N 37) at site B. In Taiwan, C. angulata spawned all year. The primary
spawning season was from March to September. The primary of adherence
spawning season of barnacles was from March to October. Rainfall was
the major factor that influenced oyster C. angulata and barnacle settlement,
the eigenvalue of PC1 was 1.83 and could explain 61.0%. There are two main
culturing seasons that move oyster larvae from coast of Taisi to farms in other
places: from March to May and from August to September. Although the
oyster larvae are more abundant in spring, fishermen prefer harvesting the
larvae in autumn to avoid the typhoon season (July-September). |

摘要: | Coastal wetlands have been gradually developed by aquaculture and other anthropogenic
infrastructure, reducing the habitat for water birds. The traditional operation of shallow-pond milkfish
(Chanos chanos) aquaculture in Taiwan may provide a model for aquaculture production that operates
in harmony with overwintering water birds. The goal of this study was to test whether experimental
water drawdown of aquaculture ponds, following the seasonal, traditional milkfish aquaculture, can
create resource pulses that attract water birds in Tainan City in southern Taiwan. This experiment
tested four types of aquaculture with potential for application: wild fish, no-feed tilapia, milkfish,
and tilapia with feed. Ponds were surveyed every other day for water depth and water birds at
least 37 times in four winters after water drawdown. In general, drawdown ponds created resource
pulses that attracted higher feeding bird densities and numbers of species than control ponds in all
aquaculture types. Milkfish ponds often had higher water birds in each year. Deep waders were
sometimes the most abundant guild in the control, whereas shorebirds, shallow and deep waders
were often higher in the drawdown treatment. Bird densities and numbers of species were correlated
with water level, benthic biomass and water Chl a, but not with tilapia biomass. Species, such as
Black-faced Spoonbills (Platalea minor), responded to water levels with the exception of Little Egrets
(Egretta garzetta). The operation of seasonal, traditional shallow-pond milkfish aquaculture is suitable
for foraging of water birds during the winter migratory bird season. |

摘要: | Lycaenidae is one of the larger of the world’s butterfly families, based on number and diversity of species,
but knowledge of roosting in this group is sparse. Zizina otis riukuensis and Zizeeria maha okinawana are
two small lycaenids that are commonly found in urban settings and widely distributed across much of Asia.
We conducted experiments on a university campus to determine the plant species and plant structures
commonly used by these two blues when roosting. We also tested the hypothesis that gregarious roosting
exists in these two blues by demonstrating the non-random distribution of roosting blues and the tight
mapping of their roosts to the spatial distribution of specific plant species and/or specific plant structures,
as well as by demonstrating behavioral interactions among individuals during roosting-assembly. We
found both Z. otis and Z. maha roosted primarily on flowers and fruits of Tridax procumbens and Vernonia
cinerea. We also found that these blues formed conspicuous roosting aggregations with significant
positive associations between the flowers and fruits of both T. procumbens and V. cinerea and the blues.
Moreover, our behavioral observations showed that these blues expressed various levels of interaction
during roosting gatherings. Based on these findings, we conclude that gregarious roosting exists in both
Z. otis and Z. maha. To our knowledge, this paper represents one of the first demonstration of nocturnal
gregarious roosting in lycaenids. This study also highlights the importance of institutional estates in
providing roosting resources for butterflies in urban ecosystems.

摘要: | Stream grade control structures (GCSs) can have strong effects on stream habitat and communities.
While most studies of GCSs have examined their impacts on fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages,
few have focused on their impacts on benthic algae. Thus, this research studied effects of GCSs by
comparing benthic algal communities in a forested stream section with those in a GCS section
in a subtropical stream of central Taiwan. We included habitat and water quality surveys and an
algal growth experiment with 3 treatments: forested, GCS, and shaded GCS. The GCS section had a
greater stream wetted width, percentage of pool area, and algal biomass indicated by chlorophyll a,
algal biovolume, and density than the forested section, whereas the forested section had a higher
canopy cover, substratum size, and habitat diversity. Filamentous green algae were the dominant
group in the GCS section, whereas diatoms were dominant in the forested section. Experimental
results showed that GCSs strongly elevated algal biomass and changed community compositions.
The shaded treatment significantly reduced >80% of the algal biomass in the GCS section, close to
the reduction in the forested treatment. Considering all variables altered by the GCS, canopy cover
might be the primary responsible factor. We suggest considerations on design and construction of
GCSs. |

摘要: | Tadpoles may be omnivorous with diverse trophic positions beyond herbivory, and may require multiple approaches for identification. Understanding the trophic and ecological roles of omnivorous tadpoles may require examination at a species level. The goals of this study were to determine the trophic positions of Bufo bankorensis tadpoles by using stable isotopes and food selection experiments, verify the tadpoles’ effects on benthic resources with enclosure–exclosure experiments, and examine their role on nutrient cycling. Stable isotope experiments showed that B. bankorensis tadpoles fed on algae and animal items, indicating a trophic level close to that of a damselfly. The food selection experiments showed that the tadpoles fed on dead tadpoles and mayflies but not on live animals, making them necrophagous, and further testing revealed that the tadpoles preferred dead tadpoles over algae. In the enclosure–exclosure experiment, the tadpoles reduced the amounts of algae and organic matter and changed the compositions of algal growth forms. The tadpoles released nitrogen (N) into the ambient water, which was then recycled by benthic algae, as revealed by an 15N addition experiment. We concluded that B. bankorensis tadpoles have trophic and ecological roles related to their trophic positions in a subtropical stream ecosystem. |

摘要: | Wastewater effluent from aquaculture ponds can affect aquatic ecosystems. To mitigate
this problem, we designed 2 sets (southern and northern) of land-based and farm-scale sequential
integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems in order to reduce water pollution and to
diversify and optimize aquaculture products in coastal southern Taiwan. In each system, the 1st pond
cultivatedmilkfish as themain aquaculture product, the 2nd pond cultivated Portuguese oysters as the
product to reduce suspended particles, and the 3rd pond cultivated the seaweed Gracilaria sp. as feed
and to absorb nutrients. Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) were added to the southern system in order to
reduce nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare performance parameters of
the compartments and the overall IMTA systems preliminarily. Our results showed that the southern
system with the addition of PSB had lower PO43-P, slightly higher turbidity, and higher brown
algal biomass than the northern system. In the southern system, PO43-P and cyanobacteria levels
were lowest at the end of the seaweed pond. In the northern system, NO2-N and phytoplankton
levels were lowest at the end of the seaweed pond. Turbidity was reduced in the oyster pond and
further reduced in the Gracilaria pond in both systems. The high seaweed yield in the northern system
indicated substantial nutrient absorption. Advantages and limitations in terms of water purification
and aquaculture production of these IMTA systems are evaluated in the present paper. |

摘要: | Algal biomass is important for aquaculture in terms of eutrophication, as a secondary
metabolite threat, and as a food source for suspension feeders and benthos. In order to evaluate
the applicability of an in situ FluoroProbe instrument, chlorophyll a (chl a) measured with this
device was compared to chl a measured by a fluorometer and to algal densities and biovolumes
determined by direct counts. Monthly surveys were conducted in 3 types of aquaculture ponds
(tilapia, milk fish, and common orient clam) from October 2011 through April 2012 in the Cigu
region of Tainan City, Taiwan. Results showed that green algae were the predominant phytoplankton
group, followed by cyanobacteria, euglenoids, and diatoms. The 3 types of aquaculture
ponds had wide ranges of chl a, pH, salinity, turbidity, PO4
−3-P, and suspended solids. Chl a
measured by the FluoroProbe had significant regressions with chl a values measured by a fluorometer,
and with algal densities and biovolumes determined by counting; however, when chl a
was >250 μg l−1, the correlation between the FluoroProbe and the fluorometer diminished. The
difference in chl a reads between these 2 methods increased when chl a concentration exceeded
200 μg l−1. Of the 4 differently colored algal groups measured by the FluoroProbe, only the green
and blue groups had significant regressions with their respective biovolumes, whereas the red
and brown groups had no significant regression with their respective biovolumes. Our results
show the applicability of the FluoroProbe in algal monitoring of aquaculture ponds, although
caution is needed at higher chl a levels. |

摘要: | This study used the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b and control region sequences to
examine the population genetic structure of Microphysogobio brevirostris, an endemic
cyprinid species in northern Taiwan. In total, 90 specimens were collected from six populations
belonging to four major rivers. All haplotypes were identified as two major clades
(Clades N and S), exhibiting a southern and a northern distribution. The results of statistical
dispersal-vicariance analysis (S-DIVA) revealed that two vicariance events and one
dispersal event shaped the phylogeographic pattern of M. brevirostris. These results suggest
that the ancestral populations of M. brevirostris are widely distributed throughout
northern Taiwan, north of the Miaoli Plateau. The ancestral populations then diverged into
two clades (N and S) by the raising of the Taoyuan Plateau. Finally, two major rivers of the S
clade diverged and dispersed into adjacent rivers. Besides, our results revealed that
Microphysogobio alticorpus and M. brevirostris colonized Taiwan during the same ice age
through different colonization routes. |

摘要: | Intensive agriculture has degraded streams in subtropical Taiwan, but agricultural impacts on fish assemblages are not well studied. The goal of this study was to understand the changes in structure and function of fish assemblages along environmental gradients in an agricultural region of South-central Taiwan. Nineteen sites in the hill and upper plain regions were selected for fish sampling during the base flow period. Water chemistry analyses and rapid habitat assessment were also conducted. A cluster analysis separated fish assemblages into 4 assemblage groups and a single site. A redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that environmental variables explained 73.9% of species variance. RDA axis 1 represented a habitat-diversity, cover, and nutrient gradient, whereas RDA axis 2 represented a complex riparian condition gradient. The relative abundances of dominant fish species and assemblage groups were related to the water and habitat variables. The trophic and tolerance guilds were correlated with RDA axes. The number of fish species increased with decreasing elevation. Both the structure and the function of fish assemblages changed with water and habitat gradients in these subtropical agricultural streams. |

摘要: | The effects of benthic fish on stream benthic resources and communities have not been effectively studied in subtropical East Asia. This study examined the effects of the Acrossocheilus paradoxus benthic fish on benthic resources and communities in Jiaolong Creek, Central Taiwan. A cage experiment with a no-fish control and a fish treatment was used to study the effects of A. paradoxus on the mass of algae and detritus and on the density and community structure of algae and macroinvertebrates. Additional diets, nutrient excretion rates, and feeding scars of this fish were also examined. A. paradoxus fed primarily on algae and detritus. The fish treatment had lower chlorophyll a, phaeophytin a, and ash-free dry mass than the no-fish control. Areas of concentrated feeding scars by A. paradoxus had consistently lower chlorophyll a than adjacent non-feeding areas. The mean density of macroinvertebrates was lower in the fish treatment; however, the taxa richness and diversity were higher. Algal and macroinvertebrate communities differed between treatments. A. paradoxus altered the benthic resources and communities in this study. |

摘要: | The responses of habitat and fish communities to extreme hydrological and habitat disturbance
in typhoon-prone mountain streams are not studied much. Such landscape–climate settings
may provide a unique opportunity for fish to evolve without special habitat adaptation and involve
different assembly rules compared to temperate regions. This study aimed to compare fish
communities and habitat factors before and after the typhoon season and to test the influences of
various aspects of habitat on fish assemblages between seasons. Fish and habitats were surveyed at
30 wadable stream sites in March and December 2010 in tropical southern Taiwan. Habitat variables
differed between the pre-typhoon and post-typhoon seasons. Higher species richness and the total
number of fish caught in the pre-typhoon season indicated fast recovery. Benthic fish were more
vulnerable to typhoon disturbances than sub-benthic fish. Contrary to the original hypothesis, fish
communities were more strongly related to physical habitats than water quality and riparian conditions.
In addition, consistently high fish variance explained by habitat measures in the dry seasons
indicated that environmental filtering predominated. Dominant fish species were related to main
habitat gradients, characterized by low species richness but high beta-diversity. Our findings provide
implications for fish conservation in typhoon-prone mountain streams. |

摘要: | Fish utilization of an Avicennia marina mangrove forest in
the estuary of Puzih River, in Chiayi County, Taiwan, was
investigated based on quarterly sampling surveys in 2008.
Fishes were sampled during four ebbing tides on two consecutive
days using fyke nets. A total of 1375 individuals
weighting 19.2 kg were caught, belonging to 23 families and
37 species. The fish community was dominated by juvenile
individuals of estuarine transient species and exhibited significant
seasonal variations. The most numerous species were
the spotted catfish (Arius maculatus, representing 40% of the
total biomass) and the shortnose ponyfish (Leiognathus brevirostris,
representing 33% of the total numbers). Habitat
utilization by fish in the mangroves was significantly affected
by time of year, but no significant effects of diel periodicity
were found. The results confirmed the role of mangroves in
the Puzih River estuary as a nursery habitat for nearshore fish. |

摘要: | Interdisciplinary collaboration is must-have competence for planners.
To provide interdisciplinary training, educators introduce
‘authentic learning environments’ where students conduct a ‘realworld’
project within a multi-disciplinary team. This paper reports
on a course in which the instructors, students and local stakeholders
worked together on a real project. Qualitative interview
and participatory observation were used to understand the experience
and organization of interdisciplinary training in an authentic
context. This study finds students experienced different levels of
boundary crossing – identification, coordination, reflection and
transformation. The instructors played a role of facilitating students’
teamwork and mutual understanding, which leads to reflection on
interdisciplinary collaboration. |

摘要: | 在生態學教材中,捕食作用強調取食食餌生物所造成的影響,但是對於沒有被捕食的食餌生物的影響介紹較少,最近的研究有長足的發展,新的發現是捕食者對未被捕食的食餌族群的效應不亞於直接有效取食的捕食效應。本文嘗試以兩棲類幼期的蝌蚪為例,回顧文獻整理出反捕食行為與其效應的研究進展,說明捕食者對沒有被捕捉到的食餌生物蝌蚪的影響。當食餌生物接收到捕食者或被取食的食餌生物所釋放的化學訊號後,產生行為和型態上的反捕食反應,雖然躲過捕食,但是會產生生活史或生長發育等方面的效應,因此,被捕食者是否需要權衡反捕食效應和被捕食風險?在本文說明這種捕食者造成的非捕食效應的例子與未來研究的方向。 |

摘要: | 拓殖是藻類增加族群數量與棲息地的重要過程,也是影響藻類群聚回復的重要因素,但在國內少有附著性矽藻拓殖與發展的研究。本研究目的為瞭解森林溪流中矽藻的拓殖和群聚發展。本研究於南投縣蓮華池地區的火焙坑溪進行,實驗在森林溪段中的靜水域進行,以瓷磚進行矽藻拓殖實驗,共進行41天。研究結果顯示,矽藻為拓殖瓷磚的優勢類群,瓷磚上的葉綠素a和有機物重隨實驗天數增加,瓷磚上矽藻細胞密度和生物體積也隨實驗天數增加,這表示瓷磚上藻類的生物量會隨著拓殖效應而累積。矽藻種類數隨著時間增加,在第6天達到高峰。矽藻群聚歧異度隨著實驗天數減少,而矽藻群聚優勢度隨著實驗天數增加。各類矽藻的密度均隨時間增加。數種矽藻相對豐度隨著時間增加;也有數種隨著時間減少。拓殖初期與發展後期的優勢種類相似,顯示溪流中播遷
