摘要: | In Solar, by showing the downfall of an energy scientist and the danger facing consumerist society, McEwan, instead of advocating science and technology as a solution to the ecological crisis, tries to open a space for ethics based on facing ones self and the outside world courageously and attentively, which embraces both inter-human relationships and peoples relationship to the natural world. |

摘要: | Michael Ondaatje’s Secular Love has received considerable academic attention since its publication in 1984, although to date there are few critical essays that address it. I want to argue that from his study of sexual love in Secular Love, Ondaatje comes to propose a life-centered ethics that emphasizes the interconnectedness of lives as well as mutual care and respect among them. Individual lives should be able to express themselves, and differences should be respected and not be arranged in a social hierarchy. As life constantly changes, the desire to possess and control it should be replaced by an awareness of its fluidity, and consequently, more attention to the individual moments in life. Likewise, artificial boundaries should be more flexible to cope with the changing relationships among people and among their fellow living beings. This demand for people to respect the changes in themselves and in others implies unconditional hospitality toward strangers and respect for the natural world. People change, though they are also strangers because they come from different pasts and contain many unfamiliar things. Since human beings belong to the natural world, which contains different creatures that defy understanding, people should also respect the differences among such beings and care for them. |

摘要: | Shortlisted for the 2007 Booker Prize, Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach has
received considerable academic attention, although to date there are few
critical essays that address the novel. In particular, the author’s concern with
people’s failure to love each other, miscommunication, and the problem of
hospitality to strangers has not received the attention it deserves. In this
novel, McEwan examines why two lovers fail to love each other, and, by
extension, why people fail to do justice to strangers. In presenting a
disastrous wedding night in 1962, he exposes love as a construction on both
sides and points out the causes of its failure as well as impediments to
mutual understanding. Via the implied narrator who delves into the pasts
and minds of the central characters, McEwan indicates the importance of
keeping love alive and how to better understand each other. He also makes
the lovers’ problem resonate with people’s relationships to strangers, and
shows that, in order to respect their own lives and those of others—to
achieve a form of coexistence beneficial to all—people should go beyond
their obsession with identity and instead care for and try to understand
others. |

摘要: | While it invites deep and sustained attention, Michael Ondaatje’s Handwriting has seldom been
studied, since its publication in 1998, for the author’s concern with peace, even though this
collection of poems highlights peace and war. I will argue that in Handwriting, Ondaatje proposes
ways to achieve internal and external peace that are not only relevant to the Sri Lankan civil
war but also to the wider contemporary world. In Handwriting, Ondaatje presents a narrator
who returns to Sri Lanka because of a sense of dislocation, and who writes to understand the
cause of ethnic violence and reconstruct the Sri Lankan past that was lost during the civil war.
In doing this, Ondaatje shows a possibility of peace for Sri Lanka and his readers. People in
conflict can be united when they are less obsessed with their different identities, recognize their
shared desire for peace, respect one another’s differences, and work together to create a shared
memory that does not homogenize and is open to new elements from other cultures. As the
narrator investigates this situation by writing creatively about Sri Lankan people, his example
also demonstrates a way to achieve mutual understanding by artistically constructing a shared
memory. Alain Badiou’s views about events constitute the major theoretical framework of the
present study. |
