摘要:This study explored undergraduates’ perceptions of the tasks of analyzing authentic materials to facilitate linguistics learning. Fifty-one sophomore English majors at a university in southern Taiwan participated in the study, which focused on perceptions of the task of applying linguistics concepts to identify characteristics of morphology and semantics in commercials and lyrics. Students were divided into twelve groups of four or five students each. Each group was required to analyze one English commercial, one Chinese commercial, one set of lyrics in English, and one set of lyrics in Chinese, each of which was selected by one of the four group members. A qualitative approach was adopted as the research methodology for this study. The data were collected through papers about 28 commercials and 24 lyric sets, as well as reflections conducted at the end of the course. The findings showed the following: 1) the most conspicuous characteristics identified related to morphology were conversion, compounding, and blending; semantic roles, metonymy and polysemy were the most obvious semantic features identified; 2) the students in this study considered the search for appropriate commercials or lyrics (materials) to be the most difficult part of the task completion process; 3) the students cooperated with peers in analyzing authentic materials (commercials and lyrics) by means of the practice of linguistics theory; 4) the majority of students had positive comments/attitudes toward the group task, overcoming their difficulties in applying linguistics knowledge, using resources, enhancing their linguistics knowledge related to everyday life, promoting their interest in discerning linguistics variations and pursuing knowledge. From the results elicited during the study we obtained implications for pedagogical improvements and the assignment of linguistics tasks within the context of Taiwanese college English.

摘要:This study investigated college students perception of the effects of advertising in English. The participants were 51 college students at a university in southern Taiwan. The students did a pretest of analyzing an ad (London Clark Shoes) at the beginning of the semester and a post-test of analyzing the same ad, as well as completing a questionnaire (32 multiple-choice questions and three open-ended questions) and a interview about the course effect in the last week of the semester in order to measure the progress of ad analysis performance and perception of the course design. During the course period, various topics related to ads were covered and activities conducted The five-Likert scaled answers presented an average of 3.85 for the whole questionnaire. The results indicate that students had learned more about ads than before. They seemed to learn ad terms more clearly than rhetoric terms. The participants who liked ads felt more satisfied with copywriting improvement and practicality in the analysis of ads, and paid more attention to ads than those who did not. Moreover, the results of the answers to the three open-ended questions include the following: a general preference for learning how to appreciate and analyze ads, presenting designed ads, and applying elements and functions of ads. They had difficulties in analyzing and designing ads, and in understanding the terminology and content of ads. Some suggested the teacher to include new ads, adjust theory in respect to practice, and prolong the interval between the midterm and final presentation. Implications are provided for future similar course implementation.

摘要:Narrative writing/story telling is probably the genre most commonly used in everyday life, and its intelligent use plays an important role in developing student writers’ voices, a practice which may be expanded to other genres (Hsu & Lin, 2016, November). The purpose of this study is to examine the basic construction of 78 freshmen’s self-introduction task in a written draft, revised draft, and transcription from an oral self-introduction task in a Freshman English course to explore their performance progression and reflection upon these tasks. In the reflection data, the majority of the freshmen expressed themselves to be more willing to communicate after these tasks. The discourse data displayed the extension of six qualities, such as name given, greeting, high school, future plan, interests in future plans and audience analysis, as pointed out in Hsu and Lin’s study. The outcomes of this study will not only deepen our awareness of the main qualities of engaging self-introduction, but also provide teachers with information with which they can facilitate their students’ willingness to express themselves more effectively than before.

摘要:Abstract Cultural literacy is a popular issue that has recently been promoted in the field of cross-cultural communication. The integration of cultural literacy into college curriculum design is of increasing importance for preparing undergraduates to understand their local resources and introducing them to foreign tourists for potential communicative opportunities. This paper aims to demonstrate how cultural literacy can be enhanced among freshmen by assigning them to report on local historic sites and traditional foods, as was done in the Tourism English course at a university in southern Taiwan. Data included a project report, a teacher’s reflection and a student interview. Fifty-two students were divided into 14 groups and were asked to report on their exploration of a historical site and its traditional foods, chosen from a website. They described the food and recorded the integration of language and culture on a PPT. After presenting their reports in class, the students were required to fill out a questionnaire on their attitudes toward the course design and the assignment requirements. The findings revealed high satisfaction (an average of 4.6 out of 5 on the Likert Scale for 13 questions about the class curriculum) among the students who participated in the program. The teacher and students stated that they had benefited from obtaining cultural literacy, that they had cooperated well with each other, and that each student had made significant contributions to the successful completion of the team project. Pedagogical implications associated with cultural literacy in an English as a foreign language (EFL) learning context are summarily presented.
