摘要:Global warming is the main cause for the rise of both global temperatures and sea-level, both major variables threatening biodiversity. Rising temperatures threaten to breach the thermal limits of organisms while rising sea-level threatens the osmotic balance of coastal animals through habitat salinization. However, variations in thermal tolerance under different salinity stresses have not yet been thoroughly studied. In this study, we assessed the critical thermal maxima (CTmax) of amphibian tadpoles in different salinity conditions. We collected tadpoles of Duttaphrynus melanostictus, Fejervarya limnocharis and Microhyla fissipes from coastal areas and housed them in freshwater, low, and high salinity treatments for 7 days of acclimation. The CTmax, survival rate, and development rate of tadpoles in high salinity treatments were significantly lower than that of the two other treatments. Our results indicate that physiological performances and heat tolerances of tadpoles are negatively affected by salinization. Maximum entropy models showed that CTmax and sea-level rise are predicted to negatively affect the distribution of the three focal species. The present results suggest that global warming can lead to negative dual-impacts on coastal animals because of reduced thermal tolerances at elevated salinity. The impacts of global warming on anurans in coastal areas and other habitats impacted by salinization may be more severe than predicted and it is likely to cause similar dual-impacts on other ectotherms.

摘要:Lycaenidae is one of the larger of the world’s butterfly families, based on number and diversity of species, but knowledge of roosting in this group is sparse. Zizina otis riukuensis and Zizeeria maha okinawana are two small lycaenids that are commonly found in urban settings and widely distributed across much of Asia. We conducted experiments on a university campus to determine the plant species and plant structures commonly used by these two blues when roosting. We also tested the hypothesis that gregarious roosting exists in these two blues by demonstrating the non-random distribution of roosting blues and the tight mapping of their roosts to the spatial distribution of specific plant species and/or specific plant structures, as well as by demonstrating behavioral interactions among individuals during roosting-assembly. We found that both Z. otis and Z. maha roosted primarily on flowers and fruits of Tridax procumbens and Vernonia cinerea. We also found that these blues formed conspicuous roosting aggregations with significant positive associations between the flowers and fruits of both T. procumbens and V. cinerea and the blues. Moreover, our behavioral observations showed that these blues expressed various levels of interaction during roosting gatherings. Based on these findings, we conclude that gregarious roosting exists in both Z. otis and Z. maha. To our knowledge, this paper represents one of the first demonstration of nocturnal gregarious roosting in lycaenids. This study also highlights the importance of institutional estates in providing roosting resources for butterflies in urban ecosystems.

摘要:Volatile-mediated impacts of microbes on plants have aroused interest among scientists in the life science field. This study describes an inquiry-based laboratory module named “Microbial Talk”, which related to microbial volatilemediated communication, including the process of design, implementation, and assessment. First-year biology students in this course were allowed to complete authentic microbiology research using both typical experimental techniques and knowledge related to interspecies communication. The instructor provides continued guidance and support to ensure that students are aware of their knowledge and of the choices they encountered. Pretests and posttests were implemented to evaluate the efficacy of the “Microbial Talk” and the students experimental design ability. Assessment of the module showed that students gained self-efficacy in executing experiments and interpreting data. In conclusion, this module is cost-effective and it can be used to help guide students in their future when they encounter situations that need these scientific skills.

摘要:Regarding the honey industry, market prices are strongly affected by the origin andcomposition of products. In particular, the adulteration of honey can be divided into casesof honey being mixed with artificial syrup, the different origin of the adulteration and thepresence of cane sugar residue. Unfortunately, recent studies mentioned that most honeyis mixed with artificial syrups. Thus, determining such unnaturally present sugar isnecessary to maintain the trust of the consuming populations. To investigate the possi-bility of syrup augmentation, this study first clarifies two points of great importance. First,long-term feeding of cane sugar to honey bee colonies in winter and the continuous har-vest of honey were investigated to evaluate the C4sugar ratio in spring through inspectionof the13C/12C isotopic ratio. As the results indicated, C4sugar was detected as“sugarresidue”in honey samples when the honey bee colonies were fed with cane sugar in winterand when the honey was collected in the first and second harvests in March. As indicatedfrom the samples of 89 Taiwanese longan honeys, 54 Thai longan honeys, and 20 Taiwa-nese non-longan honeys for analysis, such“sugar residues”were in 40% (8/20) of theTaiwanese non-longan honeys, 15% (3/20) of 2017 Taiwanese longan honeys and 20% (4/20)of 2017 Thai longan honeys; these samples were classified as adulterated honey (C4%>7).Second, as revealed in the honeysprotein contents, statistically significant differenceswere found between Taiwanese (>1.00 mg/g) and Thai longan honeys (1.00 mg/g).Apparently, this significant difference could be used to classify the difference in origins oflongan honeys. This novel inspection of“sugar residue”and“origin”in honey couldrepresent the first attempt for a protocol to guarantee both the quality and quantityassurance of honey in the marketplace.

摘要:Citizen science projects are considered popular and ecient approaches to scientific research and conservation of sustainability. In addition, much research suggests that citizen science can improve participants’ environmental and scientific literacy when they participate in surveys over a period of time. However, considerable research indicates that people in short-term training programs do not change their environmental literacy significantly. Nevertheless, studies have stated that these results might result from inappropriate evaluation methods. In this study, we used personal meaning mapping (PMM) to evaluate participants’ knowledge, attitude, and behavior intention in relation to land crab protection. This method merges quantitative and qualitative dimensions, used in scientific knowledge research, which we extend to evaluate attitude and behavior intention. As a result, even with short-term training, we observe that participants’ knowledge, attitude, and behavior intention significantly improves. Although some individuals exhibit no change in certain respects, we use PMM to understand the causes in detail. Taiwan is an island, famous for its fertile landscapes and biodiversity, and we anticipate finding ecient means to improve public environmental literacy. According to our research, public engagement in citizen science projects is an excellent approach to environmental education and conservation for sustainability.

摘要:The benefit of compensatory growth is to minimize the negative effects of stress experienced by organisms early in development once the conditions improve. Tadpoles of crab-eating frog Fejervarya cancrivora are euryhaline, have the highest salt tolerance among reported anuran species and may exhibit a different pattern of compensatory growth after stress release. We examined how F. cancrivora tadpoles responded and possibly recovered from salinity stresses. Specifically, we tested whether tadpoles expressed compensatory growth, what degree of compensation they expressed after release from salinity stress and whether the stage at and duration during which they experienced salt stress influenced the size at and time to metamorphosis of tadpoles. We found that the effects of salinity stress on the growth and development of tadpoles are quite different between early and late exposure to high salinity (LHH vs. LLH). Exposure to high salinity late in development (LLH) reduced growth but not the rate of development, resulting in smaller metamorphs but a similar time to metamorphosis when compared to the control treatment (LLL). By contrast, exposure to high salinity early in development (LHH) retarded rates of growth and development of tadpoles, but the resulting prolonged larval period enabled tadpoles to catch up and reach similar metamorphic sizes to LLL treatment metamorphs. Most importantly, tadpoles released from salinity stress (LHL) exhibited similar time to and size at metamorphosis when compared to the LLL tadpoles, suggesting that they can exhibit full compensation of growth. Compensatory growth may be a useful mechanism for F. cancrivora tadpoles inhabiting brackish habitats, allowing them to overcome the effects of dramatically increased salt levels by expressing catch-up growth when the salt stress ceases.

摘要:Unlike high-altitude Rhacophorus moltrechti breeding in spring and summer and middle-altitude populations breeding throughout the year, one possible mechanism causing lowland populations to breed in winter may be that high summer temperatures at low-altitudes are stressful for tadpoles and lowland populations breed in winter to avoid this stress. However, breeding in the winter, which is the dry season in Taiwan, causes high densities since the water bodies they breed in are smaller and more isolated. We tested whether high summer water temperatures impose a cost and high tadpole densities lead to a benefit in growth, development, and survival of lowland tadpoles by rearing tadpoles at three temperatures (17 and 22oC are two typical winter water temperatures, and 27oC is a representative summer water temperature) and four different densities (5, 10, 20 and 30 tadpoles/box). We found that tadpoles metamorphosed earlier and at smaller sizes at 22oC (the higher winter water temperature) than tadpoles raised at either 17oC or 27oC. Tadpoles raised at 27oC exhibited a longer larval period and a smaller metamorphic size than those raised at 22oC. Likewise, under the two winter water temperatures but not the summer water temperature, increased tadpole density enhanced larval growth, translating into greater metamorphic mass without changing time to metamorphosis or decreasing survival rates. Nevertheless tadpoles survived to metamorphosis at 27oC, and at rates equal to those at 17 and 22oC. Our study suggests that lowland tadpoles are better adapted to maturing at cooler, winter water temperatures, and that the summer water temperatures may be stressful to their growth and development. This leads to winter breeding for lowland populations. It also suggests that lowland populations breed at high tadpole densities because high densities benefit the larval growth and development.

摘要:The Formosa Bank is a significant zoogeographical barrier for the freshwater fish in Southern Taiwan. Here, we present population genetic structure analyses on Microphysogobio alticorpus populations in Taiwan, and biogeographic pattern to infer the relationship between historic dispersal geological dynamics. A total of 24 haplotypes were genotyped for mitochondrial CR t cyt b region in 134 specimens collected from 9 populations. Relatively high levels of haplotype diversity (h ? 0.896) and low levels of nucleotide diversity (p ? 0.005) were detected in M. alticorpus. Two major phylogenetic haplotype groups, Clade N1tN2 and S, were revealed and estimated to diverge about 0.121 myr (million years) ago. Haplotype network and population genetic analyses indicated significant genetic structure (FST ? 0.876), largely concordant with the geographical location of the populations. According to SAMOVA analysis, M. alticorpus populations were divided into five units that can be explained by episodes of dispersal and population expansion followed by population fragmentation and restricted gene flow. The results of the topological pattern and network suggested that the Kaoping River was the first habitat colonized by the ancestor of M. alticorpus, before the northward dispersal.

摘要:The Taiwan Yuhina (Yuhina brunneiceps) and White-eared Sibia (Heterophasia auricularis) are nectar-feeding babblers endemic to Taiwan. We describe the morphological features of the brush-tipped tongues of these species. The tongue divides into two parts and then into four parts towards the distal end for both species. The tongues of the Taiwan Yuhina and White-eared Sibia are specialized organs adapted for collection of nectar.

摘要:ABSTRACT.—We describe and illustrate a new firmoss, Phlegmariurus changii (Huperziaceae), which is endemic to eastern Taiwan. This new species is most similar to Phlegmariurus carinatus (Desv. ex Poiret) Ching; however, it differs by leaves that are flat abaxially. In addition, the sporophylls and trophophylls are conspicuously dimorphic for Phlegmariurus changii, but essentially monomorphic in Phlegmariurus carinatus. The ecology, conservation status, and morphology of P. changii is compared to that of species in three other sections (Sect. Phlegmariurus, L. B. Zhang, Sect. Huperzioides H. S. Kung et L. B. Zhang, and Sect. Carinaturus (Herter) H. S. Kung et L. B. Zhang) of Phlegmariurus in East Asia.

摘要:The natural variation in stable water isotope ratio data, also known as water isoscape, is a spatiotemporal fingerprint and a powerful natural tracer that has been widely applied in disciplines as diverse as hydrology, paleoclimatology, ecology and forensic investigation. Although much effort has been devoted to developing a predictive water isoscape model, it remains a central challenge for scientists to generate high accuracy, fine scale spatiotemporal water isoscape prediction. Here we develop a novel approach of using the MODIS-EVI (the Moderate Resolution Imagining Spectroradiometer-Enhanced Vegetation Index), to predict d18O in precipitation at the regional scale. Using a structural equation model, we show that the EVI and precipitated d18O are highly correlated and thus the EVI is a good predictor of precipitated d18O. We then test the predictability of our EVI-d18O model and demonstrate that our approach can provide high accuracy with fine spatial (2506250 m) and temporal (16 days) scale d18O predictions (annual and monthly predictabilities [r] are 0.96 and 0.80, respectively). We conclude the merging of the EVI and d18O in precipitation can greatly extend the spatial and temporal data availability and thus enhance the applicability for both the EVI and water isoscape.

摘要:We examined d15N and d13C values of feathers from nine species, belonging to three feeding guilds (herbivores, omnivores, and insectivores), of wild passerines at eight sites along an altitudinal gradient (339–2,876 m asl)within Taroko National Park, Taiwan. We examined: (1) if altitudinal patterns in feather d15N and d13C are consistent with previously published values for plants and soils, (2) if feather d15N and d13C differ among sites, and (3) if there are year-to-year and/or month-to-month fluctuations in feather d15N and d13C of the same birds. We found no simple relationship between feather isotope values and altitude. Feather d15N values decreased significantly with increasing altitude for insectivores, but not for herbivores and omnivores. Feather d13C values increased significantly with increasing altitude for herbivores and omnivores, but not for insectivores. Altitudinal trends in feather d15N and d13C values exhibit even more inconsistent patterns when data were analyzed by species; feather d15N and d13C values for some species increased significantly with increasing altitude, others decreased significantly with increasing altitude, and still others exhibited no significant relationship between isotopic values and altitude. The R2 for the relationship between feather d15N, d13C values and altitude was generally low regardless of whether the analysis was by feeding guilds or species. This indicates much of the variation cannot be explained by altitude. There were either no significant differences between sites, or significant differences between some but not all sites when investigating d15N or d13C, whether by feeding guilds or by species. Our study suggests that carbon and nitrogen isotopes may be not useful markers to track altitudinal migration of montane passerines.

摘要:Herein we investigate the synchronous breeding migration and larval release of ovigerous females in two dominant supratidal land crabs Cardisoma carnifex and Epigrapsus notatus in the mixed semidiurnal tidal regime in Taijiang National Park (Tainan, Taiwan). We mainly focus on the monthly and daily rhythms during the breeding season of migration and larval release for these two crabs. We also seek to understand what the main environmental cues are for these monthly and diel rhythms. Both lunar and tidal amplitude cycles are potential proximate causes for the monthly lunar/semilunar reproductive rhythm in crabs. Likewise, either the 24-hour (diel) light cycle or tidal cycle can act as the proximate cause for diel reproduction rhythm, and we investigate which one is the main factor that entrains the diel rhythm for these two species. We find that the season of migration and larval release in C. carnifex occurs mainly between June and September during the rainy season while those of E. notatus occurrs mainly between September and October, near the end of the rainy season. Regarding to the rhythm of migration and larval release in monthly time scale, C. carnifex exhibits a semilunar rhythm following the syzygies and E. notatus exhibited a lunar rhythm following the full moon. However, these rhythms do not occur with the maximum amplitude nocturnal and diurnal high tides. This implies that the lunar cycle is a more important environmental cue than the tidal amplitude in the entrainment of the synchronous monthly breeding rhythm for these two species. This pattern is different from other intertidal crabs, most of which use the tidal amplitude cycle as the main environmental cue for larval release. In addition to Chiromantes haematocheir (a supratidal crab), our study provides two more species that live in the supratidal zone time their reproduction with respect to the lunar light cycle and independent of the tide amplitude cycles. For the diel rhythm, both species migrate to the shore and released larvae in the first half of the night during the flood tide. This suggests that the diel light cycle is a dominant cue for the determination of larval release timing for these two species. Larval release does not track the high slack tides, since larvae are only released during the first half of the night and these high slack tides occur only after midnight (0000-0600H) during the days of larval release for these two crab species.

摘要:Body size is a crucial metric that is often obtained during the breeding migration of female land crabs. Most commonly, these measurements are obtained by hand but hand-measuring them carries risks for both crabs and researchers. In this study, we developed a novel "photo-image approach" to measure the maximum carapace width of Cardisoma carnifex (Herbst, 1796) in the field, and compared the results with hand measurements. We found a significant relationship in the maximum carapace width measured between the two approaches (Linear regression, p 0.0001, r2 0.99). The difference (0.54 ± 0.18 mm) and relative error (0.61 ± 0.19 %) in the maximum carapace width measured between the two approaches were minimal. We suggest that the photo-image approach is feasible for determining crab size in the field. The approach holds promise for its application in citizen science projects, facilitating advancements in crab research.

摘要:Unsustainable and illegal wildlife trade threatens the Earth’s biodiversity, but regretfully with less focus on invertebrate species (Cardoso et al., 2011, 2021). Crustaceans are generally considered of less concern, due to their common use as a food source. This does not fully apply, however, to land hermit crabs, which are widely popular as pets worldwide. Captive breeding for commercial purposes remains unfeasible due to the complex life stages of land hermit crabs, and the associated technical and cost-related challenges (Liu et al., 2021). Hence, the land hermit crabs available on the market are sourced from wild-caught individuals. Previous reports indicated that there were numerous cases of unregulated and unsustainable trading of land hermit crabs. Approximately 5000 to 10 000 individuals were sold each week, and the trade gradually shifted to online platforms in Thailand (Bundhitwongrut, 2018, 2020). In Taiwan, some land hermit crab sellers can also be found near seaside tourist sites and fish markets (Hsu & Choi, 2016). The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights organization globally, uncovered instances where large quantities of wildcaught land hermit crabs were subjected to cruelty, even resulting in their death, before being sent to the market.

摘要:A new species of cicada, Euterpnosia chilanensis sp. n. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae: Cicadinae: Leptopsaltriini) is described from Northeastern Taiwan. The new species is morphologically similar to E. hoppo Matsumura, 1917, but can be distinguished using descriptive and morphometric methods. One qualitative and eight numeric diagnostic characters, all on the abdomen of the male, are provided for the differentiation of E. chilanensis sp. n. and E. hoppo, each of them being valid for clear-cut identification. A key using numeric diagnostic characters based on morphometrics is provided for the separation of E. chilanensis sp. n. from other Euterpnosia species distributed in Taiwan. Numeric diagnostic characters for some confused Euterpnosia species from Taiwan are also provided.

摘要:We used a stuffed peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) to directly test the hypotheses that the presence of a predator will (1) cause birds to select higher foraging sites than they would in the absence of a predator, and (2) affect the distance from cover at which birds forage. In the winter season of 2006, we set up four feeding stations including one within the cover, one at the edge of the cover, and two in the open at varying distances to cover. Each station contained two feeders with one on the ground and the other 1.5 m above the ground. We tested the above hypotheses by conducting three experimental treatments: the falcon’s presence in the escape cover, its presence in the open, and its absence. We recorded the number of visits made by western scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica), dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilla), and spotted towhees (Pipilo maculatus) to each feeder for each treatment. Our results showed that both the presence of the falcon and its location influenced the foraging locations chosen by these birds along the horizontal axis. However, we did not find a general pattern of foraging site selection along the horizontal axis. The horizontal responses of these species to the presence and the location of the falcon differed. We found no evidence that the falcon’s presence affected the height at which birds selected to feed. Thus, if these species do choose to feed in the presence of aerial avian predators, they appear to make horizontal but not vertical changes in their foraging choices.

摘要:溫度是影響兩棲類生理表現的重要因子。外來種亞洲錦蛙(Kaloula pulchra)於台灣南部呈現區域性的廣泛分佈,其族群間生理表現的差異,將可能僅是由生長環境所造成的結果。本研究目的為瞭解成體亞洲錦蛙在性別、日夜與族群之間,其溫度耐受表現的差異。本研究利用來自三個族群(台南、高雄與屏東地區)的不同個體,不經任何馴化處理,進行臨界高溫(CTmax)與臨界低溫(CTmin)的測定。結果顯示,性別皆無顯著差異。屏東族群的低溫耐受有呈現日夜週期的變化,日間顯著比夜間低。而不同族群亞洲錦蛙的臨界高溫與臨界低溫皆有顯著差異。台南族群的臨界高溫顯著高於屏東族群,而台南族群的臨界低溫顯著低於高雄族群,表示不同族群經歷不同的溫度歷史其溫度耐受會有差異。

摘要:雲嘉南區環境教育區域中心計畫執行區域範圍包括:雲林縣、嘉義市、嘉義縣及臺南市4縣市。本計畫以專業領導、增能學習、科技支援、研究評估、夥伴推廣等做為中心架構,整合雲嘉南地區產、官、學、機構、民間組織等各方資源及人力,形成夥伴連結並建置專業學習社群,共同推動環境教育。在專業領導方面,針對在地議題分析,提出2項共同執行議題:水資源保育、綠能與節能及3項符合區域在地特色與核心價值之議題:在地特色物種保育、里山與里海、文化資產保存。在增能學習方面,辦理1場國家環教獎輔導說明會;持續輔導夥伴團體申請環境教育相關補助;協助北區區域中心進行專書之翻譯;完成規劃建立期2年以上之環境科學家執行計畫。在科技支援方面,建置中心網站;定期於雙月之星期一發行電子版時事通訊,目前已發行3期;編製2部環境教育相關影片。在夥伴推廣方面,擴大推廣區域環境教育夥伴之合作;完成1例議題式連結促進環境教育產業化。
