摘要 Ubiquitous computing has become an area of study in computer science and electrical engineering. Mobile devices, such as mobile phones, are widely used in daily life for various purposes. Mobile devices can facilitate human interaction and access to information resources anytime and anywhere. In this paper, we propose a mobile phone based rock classification system. For this system, the mobile phone played the roles of image capture and rock information display. Rock images were classified via the remote server. Three texture features, i.e. directionality, color and granularity, were exploited to classify rock textures. A TGA based approach was developed to generate the optimal color histogram. The granularity was quantified by the fractal dimension. To alleviate the degradation resulting from texture inhomogeneity, we propose the RW-k-NN classifier to integrate the color and granularity information. The experimental results prove our system can accurately classify rocks. This implies that our system lends itself to a ubiquitous rock classification system.

摘要In this paper, an effective system is proposed to detect the bowl trajectory for bowling game videos. We extract the lane boundary information first. The distance transform is invoked to refine the bowl center locating. A new bowl-positioning model is designed to derive the bowl trajectory, which solves the obstacle using the perspective projection model with the absence of related camera parameters. The experimental results indicate that our system can achieve satisfactory performance for the bowl trajectory detection.

摘要In this article, we propose an automatic lung segmentation method. We design an ROI-adjusted initial boundary derivation method to estimate a proper initial lung boundary for ASM deformation by deriving the translation and the scaling parameters from the lung ROI. An adaptive ASM, using k-means clustering and silhouette-based cluster validation technique, is proposed to adapt to the lung shape change so that the lung shape variation among people can be overwhelmed. The experimental results indicate that the performance of the proposed lung segmentation method is superior to the traditional ASM approach.

摘要Due to the rapid growth of the elderly population, improving specific aspects of elderly healthcare has become more important. Sleeping care systems for the elderly are rare. In this paper, we propose a visual context-aware-based sleeping-respiration measurement system that measures the respiration information of elderly sleepers. Accurate respiration measurement requires considering all possible contexts for the sleeping person. The proposed system consists of a body-motion-context-detection subsystem, a respiration-context-detection subsystem, and a fast motionvector-estimation-based respiration measurement subsystem. The system yielded accurate respiratory measurements for our study population.

摘要In this letter, we propose a novel color space conversion method called adaptive projection color space (APCS). This method includes two portions: adaptive singular value decomposition and an inner product conversion algorithm for color images. We employed images from the Color FERET and CMU-PIE databases for training and experiment. The results revealed that the recognition rates from our proposed APCS approach were higher than other color spaces and those of methods proposed in relevant studies.

摘要This paper presents an automated and comprehensive system for eliminating rib shadows in chest radiographs, which integrates lung field identification, rib segmentation, rib intensity estimation, and suppression. We designed a region of interest (ROI)-based method to estimate a suitable initial lung boundary for active shape model (ASM) deformation by determining the translation and scaling parameters from the lung ROI. By considering the anatomical structure of the rib cage, we developed a locale sampling scheme to achieve nonparametric rib modeling. This scheme integrates knowledge-based generalized Hough transform (GHT) for accurate rib segmentation. We subsequently estimated rib intensity using the real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA). Experimental results indicate that the relative conspicuity of the nodules increased after rib suppression, compared to the original image. Additionally, the proposed system uses only one standard chest radiograph, and the dual-energy subtraction technique is not required. Thus, this system is suitable for radiologists and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) schemes for detecting lung nodules in chest radiographs.

摘要In recent years, singular value decomposition has become a popular tool for image watermarking. In this paper, we propose a new blind watermarking scheme by quantizing the singular values of wavelet component. To optimize the system performance, we treat the image watermarking as a multi-objective optimization problem based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II. Based on this new perspective, the inherent conflict existing in image fidelity and watermark robustness for image watermarking can be objectively handled. The experimental study shows that our method indeed provides superior performance.

摘要The optimization of watermarked image fidelity and watermark robustness is an attractive research topic in image watermarking. In this paper, we propose a new image watermarking scheme based on multi-objective bees algorithm to promote watermarking robustness as well as fidelity. In contrast with the existing genetic algorithms (GAs) based approaches utilizing single objective optimization, we treat the image watermarking as a multi-objective optimization problem. Based on this new perspective, the inherent conflict existing in image fidelity and watermark robustness for image watermarking can be objectively handled. The experimental study shows that our method indeed outperform the conventional GA-based approaches in both robustness and fidelity. Furthermore, the proposed watermarking method can also provide solutions with higher stability.

名稱Video-Based Eye Tracking to Detect the Attention Shift: A Computer Classroom Context-Aware System

摘要Eye and head movements evoked in response to obvious visual attention shifts. However, there has been little progress on the causes of absent-mindedness so far. The paper proposes an attention awareness system that captures the conditions regarding the interaction of eye gaze and head pose under various attentional switching in computer classroom. Via the algorithm of complexion area detection, eye location and eye tracking, the system detects the shifts of the subject’s attention, records it and sends a notification to the class teacher. In five variant experiments of attentional shift, the authors find the cues of subjects when turning to other directions, moving forwards or backwards, and closing eyes. It applies even if the students wear glasses or have hair fringe. The findings of absent-mindedness are very important for psychologists or educators conducting post-hoc analysis. These experimental results show eye tracking are useful for detecting shift of attention.

名稱Enhanced Ridge Structure for Improving Fingerprint Image Quality Based on a Wavelet Domain

摘要Fingerprint image enhancement is one of the most crucial steps in an automated fingerprint identification system. In this paper, an effective algorithm for fingerprint image quality improvement is proposed. The algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage is decomposing the input fingerprint image into four subbands by applying two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform. At the second stage, the compensated image is produced by adaptively obtaining the compensation coefficient for each subband based on the referred Gaussian template. The experimental results indicated that the compensated image quality was higher than that of the original image. The proposed algorithm can improve the clarity and continuity of ridge structures in a fingerprint image. Therefore, it can achieve higher fingerprint classification rates than related methods.

摘要Long time to drive a car is likely to cause physical fatigue and results in accident. Hence, we want to develop a system that can alert the driver when he is dozing to reduce accidents. This study presents a new driver doze detection scheme by judging if the driver’s head rotates. Hence, our system can successfully operate even the driver wear sunglasses. When the system finds the driver keep no head rotation for a predefined period it will alert the driver.

摘要Currently, cardiovascular disease affects a relatively high proportion of the world’s population. Thus, developing simple and effective methods for monitoring patients with cardiovascular disease is critical for research. Monitoring the heart rate of patients is a relatively simple and effective method for managing patients with this condition. For patients, the desired heart rate monitoring equipments should be portable, instantaneous, and accurate. Because smartphones have become the most prevalent mobile device, we utilized this technology as a platform for developing a novel heart-rate measurement system. Catering to the phenomenon of people using the front camera of their smartphones as a mirror, the proposed system was designed to analyze facial-image sequences captured using the front camera. A spatiotemporal alpha-trimmed mean filter was developed to estimate a user’s heart rate quickly and accurately. The experimental results show that in addition to achieving these objectives, the developed system outperforms a similar personal computer-based system. In addition, the system performs effectively even when users are wearing glasses. Hence, the proposed system demonstrates practical value for people who must monitor their heart rate daily.

摘要In this paper, we assess if automatic inspection for spot UV coating is possible. The printing image is captured via a CCD camera. Image analysis technology was utilized to measure the distances from the marker points to the printing boundaries such that the printing defect can be determined. Based on the experimental results we found that automatic inspection for spot UV coating is possible.

名稱Age Estimation Using Correlation-Refined Features of Convolutional Neural Network

摘要Age estimation remains challenging because of its high dependence on small facial changes (based on individual propagation, increased wrinkles, and even racial or gender factors). In the past decade, some learning models of neural network based on image analysis have been rapidly developed to overcome such limitations. In this study, we developed a novel method, namely correlation-refined convolutional neural network (CR-CNN), based on some deep learning model (AlexNet). Additional to the parameters in model, the CR-CNN model considers a specific learning network, in which the neuron parameters along with refined facial features at various field-of-view levels have determined through canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Such a novel learning strategy, called low-to-middle-level-features retained transfer learning (LMLFR). Through LMLFR, the feature maps in CNN would be reorganized and join as new layer. That means the maps with high CCA values, in which neurons have high coadaptation with respect to feature-map values, are averaged and flattened; and contrarily, the maps with low CCA values are retained for the low-coadaptation neurons. All refined layers are then subjected to principal component analysis to further reduce dimensionality. At the output layer, classification is executed through support vector regressions (SVR) and Marginal Fisher Analysis (MFA) to overcome the non-Gaussian distributions of refined features on different layers. Experiments were conducted using images obtained from the well-known MORPH dataset, and the results indicated that for age estimation, the proposed model outperformed commonly used methods; the error range was approximately −5 to +5, covering approximately 80% of the learning age range. The proposed model constitutes a novel approach to feature refinement and can potentially become the basis of extensive applications.

名稱Stain Style Transfer for Histological Images Using S3CGAN

摘要This study proposes a new CycleGAN-based stain transfer model, called S3CGAN, equipped with a specialized color classifier structure. The specialized color classifier can assist the generative network to conquer the existing challenge in GANs, namely the instability of the network caused by the insufficient representativeness of the training data in the initial stage of network training. The color classifier is pretrained, hence it can provide correct color information feedback to the generator during the initial network training phase. The augmented information from color classification enables the generator to generate superior results. Owing to the CycleGAN architecture, the proposed model does not require representative paired inputs. The proposed model uses U-Net and a Markovian discriminator to enhance the structural retention ability to generate images with high fidelity.

摘要Inspired by the observation that pathologists pay more attention to the nuclei regions when analyzing pathological images, this study utilized soft segmentation to imitate the visual focus mechanism and proposed a new segmentation–classification joint model to achieve superior classification performance for breast cancer pathology images. Aiming at the characteristics of different sizes of nuclei in pathological images, this study developed a new segmentation network with excellent cross-scale description ability called DIU-Net. To enhance the generalization ability of the segmentation network, that is, to avoid the segmentation network from learning low-level features, we proposed the Complementary Color Conversion Scheme in the training phase. In addition, due to the disparity between the area of the nucleus and the background in the pathology image, there is an inherent data imbalance phenomenon, dice loss and focal loss were used to overcome this problem. In order to further strengthen the classification performance of the model, this study adopted a joint training scheme, so that the output of the classification network can not only be used to optimize the classification network itself, but also optimize the segmentation network. In addition, this model can also provide the pathologist model’s attention area, increasing the model’s interpretability. The classification performance verification of the proposed method was carried out with the BreaKHis dataset. Our method obtains binary/multi-class classification accuracy 97.24/93.75 and 98.19/94.43 for 200× and 400× images, outperforming existing methods.
