摘要own resources to the network. The abundant resources brought by P2P networks have stimulated the wide deployment of resource-consuming multimedia streaming services over a P2P architecture. Allowing for the heterogeneity of peers in their upload and download bandwidth, most researches adopt the Multiple Description Coding (MDC) technique to enable differentiated streaming services. However, due to the lack of a global view of description availability, they tend to cause the skewed distribution of descriptions and lead to the under-utilization of aggregated resources on P2P networks. In the paper, we propose a novel approach to balance the distribution of descriptions and available upload bandwidth in the P2P live streaming network. Based on the description distribution and available upload bandwidth, the proposed balancing scheme determines what descriptions a new peer should receive and their source peers such that better system scalability can be achieved. The simulation experiments indicate that our proposed balancing scheme can effectively reduce the server bandwidth consumption and rejection rate. Furthermore, abandoned peers can recover their lost descriptions mostly from the existing peers in the network instead of the server.

摘要In multimedia cellular networks, when a Mobile Host requests multimedia services, it may experience hand-offs to several cells before the request is completely served. If a target cell cannot provide adequate band-width for a service request, instead of directly dropping the request, the MH is put into the handoff queue and hopefully the requested bandwidth can be satisfied by later released bandwidth. Obviously, it is important to properly assign priorities for queued handoff of MHs based on their inborn dynamics to avoid unnecessary dropping. In this paper, we present a dynamic handoff priority adjustment scheme which applied a handoff queuing scheme to dynamically adjust handoff priority based on receiving signal strength, service class, and mobility of Mobile Hosts. In addition, idle bandwidth reserved by inactive MHs is reallocated to urgent handoff MHs to reduce the call dropping probability. The goal of the proposed dynamic handoff priority ad-justment scheme is to further reduce call dropping probability while still maintaining high bandwidth utiliza-tion and acceptable call blocking probability on multimedia cellular networks.

摘要In peer-to-peer video-on-demand streaming networks, the alleviation of server load depends on reciprocal stream sharing among peers. In general, ondemand video services enable clients to watch videos from beginning to the end in a pipeline fashion. As long as a client still caches the initial part of the video, it can provide on-demand service to the subsequent clients without intervention of a server. Therefore, the key challenge is how to maximize the availability of a video for stream relay by keeping the initial part of a video in a peer’s buffer as long as possible. In addition, to address the issues of delivering data on lossy network and providing scalable video quality of services for clients, the adoption of multiple description coding has been proven as a feasible resolution by much research work. In this paper, we propose a novel caching scheme for P2P on-demand streaming called Balanced Dynamic Buf fering with multiple description coding. The proposed balanced dynamic buffering gradually reduces the number of buffered descriptions once the buffer of a peer gets full. In addition, peers are grouped based on the number of descriptions cached in their buffer. The intra-group balancing and intergroup balancing are applied for well distributing descriptions and balancing their forwarding bandwidth on peer-to-peer on-demand streaming networks. In the paper, we also propose the failure recovery for the balanced dynamic buffering scheme. Simulation results showed that the balanced dynamic buffering significantly outperformed other dynamic buffering schemes and the CoopNet in server bandwidth utilization, and a longer buffer in a peer did favor the failure recovery on peer-topeer on-demand streaming networks.

名稱NCG: Partitioning Working Sensors Based on Node Coverage in Wireless Sensor Networks

摘要How to prolong sensor network lifetime while maintaining a sufficient sensing area has been one of the most important research issues in wireless sensor networks. In general, sensors in the connectivity group are within sensing range of each other, and data collected by sensors in a connectivity group are assumed to be similar. In this paper, we present a novel approach to partition sensors based on connectivity in wireless sensor networks, called Node Coverage Grouping (NCG), which is proved to be a NP-hard problem. We also propose a heuristic algorithm of NCG with the time complexity of O(n3). In addition, we present two approaches of the avoidance of blind period for NCG, called periodic probing (P-NCG) and next-turn probing (NT-NCG).The experimental results showed that NCG outperforms the Lightweight Deployment-Aware Scheduling (LDAS) and the Probing Environment and Adaptive Sleeping (PEAS) methods in terms of the number of living nodes, the number of working nodes, and the coverage with the proceeding of system lifetime. In addition, by applying probing mechanisms on NCG to avoid blind period, P-NCG and NT-NCG would have higher average coverage than LDAS and PEAS. In conclusion, NT-NCG works the best among these five approaches in terms of coverage and system lifetime on WSN when unexpected node failure is concerned.

名稱Design and Implementation of H.264 Player for Multiple Description Coded Videos

摘要Scalable video coding techniques, such as multiple description coding (MDC), not only effectively address the issue of delivering videos over error-prone networks but also provides solutions of servicing scalable videos for heterogeneous clients. When multiple description coded video chunks are received at a client, they must be buffered based on network condition and also be timely decoded and merged in order to provide smooth playback. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a novel H.264 player for multiple description coded videos. There are two major buffers in our MDC player, which are decoded chunks buffer and merged chunks buffer. To avoid buffer overflow or underflow, merging control and transmitting rate control mechanisms are proposed. Experiment results show that with the aids of proposed control mechanisms, no buffer overflow or underflow was experienced during the playback. Most importantly, based on our measurement, the overheads of decoding a chunk and merging chunks are negligible compared to rendering time of one chunk, which would not affect the smoothness of playback at all.

摘要With the rapidly development of broadband networks, more and more users nowadays tend to acquire their desired videos from media-on-demand servers. How to efficiently provide multimedia contents for a large number of heterogeneous users on the Internet has become a noticeable issue. In our previous work, we proposed the Loopback-MDC scheme on CDN-P2P network to address such a scalability issue. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a novel peer-to-peer streaming system with the Loopback-MDC on actual networks, named TuBeck. The TuBeck consists of preprocessor, server, peer, and player modules with the support of network infrastructure library. In TuBeck, multimedia sources are preprocessed to multiple descriptions. Each description is divided as a sequence of H.264/AVC chunks by modified JM encoder for real-time streaming. The network infrastructure library provides the nodes (server and peers) with the fundamental functionalities of network connections and communications. Message exchange and streaming control among nodes follow the pre-defined LM protocol. The server, peer, and player modules are functionally multithreaded in order to enhance the system performance. The experimental results show that the Loopback-MDC is practical for realizing a P2P streaming system in terms of the server loading, CPU/Memory usage, and efficiency of failure recovery with respect to various arrival rates, failure rates, and viewing qualities.

摘要In general, on-demand video services enable clients to watch videos from beginning to end. As long as clients are able to buffer the initial part of the video they are watching, on-demand service can provide access to the video to the next clients who request to watch it. Therefore, the key challenge is how to keep the initial part of a video in a peer’s buffer for as long as possible, and thus maximize the service availability of a video for stream relay. In our previous research work, we proposed a novel caching scheme for peer-topeer on-demand streaming, called Dynamic Buf fering. The dynamic buffering relies on the feature of Multiple Description Coding to gradually reduce the number of cached descriptions held in a peer’s buffers, once the buffer is full. In this paper, we proposed three description dropping policies for dynamic buffering, called sequence dropping, m-dropping, and binary dropping. In addition, mathematical formulas of the reduced number of buffer adjustments of descriptions and the reduction of the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping and binary dropping by factors of the number of receiving descriptions (n) and the number of discarded descriptions (m) are established. Experimental results show that the m-dropping, mceiling(n/2), generally outperformed m-dropping, m2 and binary dropping in terms of service availability. Even though the accumulated reduction of buffer adjustments for m dropping policies was less than that for binary dropping, the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping was much greater than that for binary dropping. Furthermore, Compared with the sequence dropping, the m-dropping, mceiling(n/2), would have much less number of buffer adjustments with little difference of the number of selectable descriptions.

名稱ASAP: Automatic Status Adjustment APP for Firefox OS

摘要Most of applications (APP) for automatic status adjustment on mobile phone have been implemented for Android and IOS systems. In this work, we specifically develop the APP called ASAP to import such a functionality to the promising Firefox OS. Firefox OS has been developed by Mozilla in recent years, using web APIs to directly communicate with the core of the operating system and the underneath hardware of a mobile phone. In ASAP, the automatic status adjustment is achieved by system monitoring with scenario scripts. When the condition of a certain script is met, the corresponding pre-defined activities are executed to instantly alter the status of a mobile phone. There are six conditions and six activities defined in the scenario, and the satisfaction of one condition can trig multiple activities to execute. In addition to listening the activity events, we also use a timer to periodically scan the pre-defined scenario scripts to trig the activities. The experimental results show that the ASAP can successfully trig the corresponding activities when a pre-defined scenario is detected.
