摘要Improving students’ web-based problem-solving ability has been recognized as an important and challenging issue before they enter job market. This study aims to explore the problem-solving effectiveness and learning attitude of college students toward applying a web-based learning system (Meta-Analyzer) within an inquiry learning activity. Fifty three first-year college students of Business Administration Department participated in the study to experience the intervention of the system. However, it is unsure whether such a learning mechanism is suitable to every learner. Thus, this study examines the effects of human factors on problem-solving effectiveness within the web- based inquiry learning context. Among various human factors, this study focuses on cognitive styles, especially Witken’s Field Dependence. The results indicate that Field Independent learners can get great benefits from the learning mechanism. Discussions on how to accommodate the needs of different cognitive styles groups are provided based on the results.

摘要Evidence indicates that concept mapping can reduce students’ cognitive load and facilitate meaningful learning. Using a concept map description approach, the ontology defines the relationship between concepts that is feasible for resource sharing and reusing. In this study, we implement a concept map learning system with ontology technology to help users search the concept map, determine relationships between nodes or predicates, and find the common concept or predicate among the concepts to help reduce the user’s cognitive load.

摘要Previous studies show that the concept mapping approach could organize students cognitive schema, decrease student’s cognitive load and help promote meaningful learning in any educational settings. However, concept mapping has its limitation in the representation of knowledge for complex concepts and domain knowledge. Thus, in the study, we proposed and implemented an ontology-based Reasoning learning system. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed system, a quasi-experimental design method was conducted in the study with three groups. A total of ninety-five seventh graders participated in the experiment. The graders were randomly distributed to three groups, one experimental group and two control groups. The experimental group with 31 students was conducted ontology-based reasoning approach. The first control group with 32 students was managed ontology learning approach, while the second control group with 32 students was guided with concept map learning approach. The experimental findings show the proposed approach could help learners improve students’ misconceptions and improve their learning performance; moreover, it could reduce students’ cognitive load in the learning process. Relevant suggestions are advised in the results of the study.

名稱Effect of Innovative Ontology-based Approach on Learning Performance of Students with ANOVA Method

摘要Previous research show that the concept mapping embedded in instructional settings could effectively improve students cognitive schema, and facilitate meaningful learning. However, concept mapping has its limitation, especially in the representation of knowledge for complex concepts and domain knowledge. Thus, we developed an Ontology­based Reasoning Assistant Learning System (ORALS) in the study. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed system, a quasi­experimental design method were conducted in the study with three groups. A total of eighty­nine 7th secondary school student participated in the experiment­ one experimental group and two control groups. The experimental group with 29 students was conducted ontology­based reasoning approach. The first control group with 30 students was managed with concept map learning approach, while the second control group with 30 students was guided with ontology learning approach. The experimental results show that the proposed learning system could facilitate middle­ and low­achieving students in the experimental group outperform those in other two groups. In addition, high­and middle­achieving students in the experimental group have lower cognitive load than those in others. Relevant suggestions are advised in the results of the study.

摘要Although there were some ontology-based learning researches, most of researches were off-line ontology knowledge base or without reasoning mechanism to assist user’s learning. We integrated several APIs to create an ontology-based assistant learning system (ORALS) that provides online editing ontology and rules in web pages and it is compatible with these popular ontology editors. To simplify users creating ontology processes, That provides users search concept and reasoning items, all searching or reasoning results will be listed and shown by visualize concept maps. By three teachers’ experiences, they applied ontology engineering technology to extract knowledge to ontology and build course concept maps and reasoning rules. There were three classes grade 7th of junior high school total 95 students joined our study with the nervous system course unit of Science and Technology. We hope this paper not only can present applied ontology to assist learning scenarios, but also help the other fields to induced ontology technologies easily.

摘要Web-based peer assessment has been considered an important process for learning. However, students may not offer constructive feedback due to lack of expertise knowledge. Therefore, this study proposed a scaffolded assessment approach accordingly. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the quasi-experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of scaffolded assessment for self-critiques and peer assessment on students’ learning effectiveness in the web-based assessment activities. A total of ninety 7th graders participated in the experiment, and divided into three groups with or without the scaffolding critique. The results show the use of the scaffolded assessment in the web-based peer assessment activities did not show a significant difference in the students’ learning effectiveness. Even though the results show that learning effectiveness of the participants in the two experimental groups is significantly enhanced, there is no significant effect of providing the scaffolded assessment on the participants’ learning effectiveness in the three groups. In addition, the participants showed a positive learning attitude toward the web-based assessment activities and agreed that the activities could enhance the participants’ interactions between the peers and instructor.

摘要Peer assessment can expand the cognitive schemas of students, facilitate knowledge construction, and promote discussion and cooperative learning among students and their peers. In recent years, the application of the internet to conduct peer assessment activities has been widely implemented. The advantages of networked peer assessments over traditional paper assessments include greater anonymity, less paper consumption, and greater convenience for teachers in terms of monitoring student progress. However, students must possess adequate assessment professionalism in order to provide their peers with meaningful and constructive feedback. This study therefore introduced a mechanism to assign works to peers based on assessment professionalism. Under this mechanism, students review the work of their peers within the range of their assessment capabilities. This maintains students’ motivation to learn as they assess and observe the works of their peers and improves their learning effectiveness.

名稱Using the Networked Peer Support Strategy to Enhance Reading Comprehension for Students with Various Thinking Styles

摘要How to enhance students’ reading comprehension as well as reading interest is a currently serious problem for elementary school students. Students can learn various knowledge through reading, as a result of this reason, the advantage and disadvantage of reading ability could directly affect the learning efficiency. This study proposes networked peer support strategy which is different from previous networked peer assessment strategy. It adopts the method to ask students’ to give one another positive feedback during the activity. It can also reduce competitive pressure among students and enhance interaction willingness and learning fun, and then increase the degree and depth of reading reflection. The results show that using networked peer support strategy is much better than using networked peer assessment strategy in improving reading comprehension. Further, students who get medium-achievement in the pre-test and belong to site-dependent cognitive style and executive thinking style all have significant improvements in reading comprehension.

名稱An Appropriate Prompts System Based on the Polya Method for Mathematical Problem-Solving

摘要Current mathematics education emphasizes techniques, formulas, and procedures, neglecting the importance of understanding, presentation, and reasoning. This turns students into passive listeners that are well-practiced only in using formulas that they do not understand. We therefore adopted the Polya problem-solving method to provide students with a diversified foundation for problem-solving. Furthermore, giving students immediate feedback in the form of prompts can help them to find the answers on their own them, thereby helping them learn more effectively. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influences of a teaching activity incorporating Polya’s method and an appropriate prompt mechanism on the learning effectiveness of students. Research Subjects were two classes selected from an elementary school in Taiwan; one as the experimental group were taught with the providing appropriate prompts based on the Polya strategy of mathematical problems solving, the other one as the control group were treated by the conventional instructions. The results showed that: (1) there were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in the learning effectiveness; (2) most of the students in the experimental group were satisfied by the proposed prompts system.
