摘要We examined d15N and d13C values of feathers from nine species, belonging to three feeding guilds (herbivores, omnivores, and insectivores), of wild passerines at eight sites along an altitudinal gradient (339–2,876 m asl)within Taroko National Park, Taiwan. We examined: (1) if altitudinal patterns in feather d15N and d13C are consistent with previously published values for plants and soils, (2) if feather d15N and d13C differ among sites, and (3) if there are year-to-year and/or month-to-month fluctuations in feather d15N and d13C of the same birds. We found no simple relationship between feather isotope values and altitude. Feather d15N values decreased significantly with increasing altitude for insectivores, but not for herbivores and omnivores. Feather d13C values increased significantly with increasing altitude for herbivores and omnivores, but not for insectivores. Altitudinal trends in feather d15N and d13C values exhibit even more inconsistent patterns when data were analyzed by species; feather d15N and d13C values for some species increased significantly with increasing altitude, others decreased significantly with increasing altitude, and still others exhibited no significant relationship between isotopic values and altitude. The R2 for the relationship between feather d15N, d13C values and altitude was generally low regardless of whether the analysis was by feeding guilds or species. This indicates much of the variation cannot be explained by altitude. There were either no significant differences between sites, or significant differences between some but not all sites when investigating d15N or d13C, whether by feeding guilds or by species. Our study suggests that carbon and nitrogen isotopes may be not useful markers to track altitudinal migration of montane passerines.

摘要The natural variation in stable water isotope ratio data, also known as water isoscape, is a spatiotemporal fingerprint and a powerful natural tracer that has been widely applied in disciplines as diverse as hydrology, paleoclimatology, ecology and forensic investigation. Although much effort has been devoted to developing a predictive water isoscape model, it remains a central challenge for scientists to generate high accuracy, fine scale spatiotemporal water isoscape prediction. Here we develop a novel approach of using the MODIS-EVI (the Moderate Resolution Imagining Spectroradiometer-Enhanced Vegetation Index), to predict d18O in precipitation at the regional scale. Using a structural equation model, we show that the EVI and precipitated d18O are highly correlated and thus the EVI is a good predictor of precipitated d18O. We then test the predictability of our EVI-d18O model and demonstrate that our approach can provide high accuracy with fine spatial (2506250 m) and temporal (16 days) scale d18O predictions (annual and monthly predictabilities [r] are 0.96 and 0.80, respectively). We conclude the merging of the EVI and d18O in precipitation can greatly extend the spatial and temporal data availability and thus enhance the applicability for both the EVI and water isoscape.

摘要溫度是影響兩棲類生理表現的重要因子。外來種亞洲錦蛙(Kaloula pulchra)於台灣南部呈現區域性的廣泛分佈,其族群間生理表現的差異,將可能僅是由生長環境所造成的結果。本研究目的為瞭解成體亞洲錦蛙在性別、日夜與族群之間,其溫度耐受表現的差異。本研究利用來自三個族群(台南、高雄與屏東地區)的不同個體,不經任何馴化處理,進行臨界高溫(CTmax)與臨界低溫(CTmin)的測定。結果顯示,性別皆無顯著差異。屏東族群的低溫耐受有呈現日夜週期的變化,日間顯著比夜間低。而不同族群亞洲錦蛙的臨界高溫與臨界低溫皆有顯著差異。台南族群的臨界高溫顯著高於屏東族群,而台南族群的臨界低溫顯著低於高雄族群,表示不同族群經歷不同的溫度歷史其溫度耐受會有差異。

摘要ABSTRACT.—We describe and illustrate a new firmoss, Phlegmariurus changii (Huperziaceae), which is endemic to eastern Taiwan. This new species is most similar to Phlegmariurus carinatus (Desv. ex Poiret) Ching; however, it differs by leaves that are flat abaxially. In addition, the sporophylls and trophophylls are conspicuously dimorphic for Phlegmariurus changii, but essentially monomorphic in Phlegmariurus carinatus. The ecology, conservation status, and morphology of P. changii is compared to that of species in three other sections (Sect. Phlegmariurus, L. B. Zhang, Sect. Huperzioides H. S. Kung et L. B. Zhang, and Sect. Carinaturus (Herter) H. S. Kung et L. B. Zhang) of Phlegmariurus in East Asia.

摘要We used a stuffed peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) to directly test the hypotheses that the presence of a predator will (1) cause birds to select higher foraging sites than they would in the absence of a predator, and (2) affect the distance from cover at which birds forage. In the winter season of 2006, we set up four feeding stations including one within the cover, one at the edge of the cover, and two in the open at varying distances to cover. Each station contained two feeders with one on the ground and the other 1.5 m above the ground. We tested the above hypotheses by conducting three experimental treatments: the falcon’s presence in the escape cover, its presence in the open, and its absence. We recorded the number of visits made by western scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica), dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilla), and spotted towhees (Pipilo maculatus) to each feeder for each treatment. Our results showed that both the presence of the falcon and its location influenced the foraging locations chosen by these birds along the horizontal axis. However, we did not find a general pattern of foraging site selection along the horizontal axis. The horizontal responses of these species to the presence and the location of the falcon differed. We found no evidence that the falcon’s presence affected the height at which birds selected to feed. Thus, if these species do choose to feed in the presence of aerial avian predators, they appear to make horizontal but not vertical changes in their foraging choices.

摘要The Taiwan Yuhina (Yuhina brunneiceps) and White-eared Sibia (Heterophasia auricularis) are nectar-feeding babblers endemic to Taiwan. We describe the morphological features of the brush-tipped tongues of these species. The tongue divides into two parts and then into four parts towards the distal end for both species. The tongues of the Taiwan Yuhina and White-eared Sibia are specialized organs adapted for collection of nectar.

摘要Unlike high-altitude Rhacophorus moltrechti breeding in spring and summer and middle-altitude populations breeding throughout the year, one possible mechanism causing lowland populations to breed in winter may be that high summer temperatures at low-altitudes are stressful for tadpoles and lowland populations breed in winter to avoid this stress. However, breeding in the winter, which is the dry season in Taiwan, causes high densities since the water bodies they breed in are smaller and more isolated. We tested whether high summer water temperatures impose a cost and high tadpole densities lead to a benefit in growth, development, and survival of lowland tadpoles by rearing tadpoles at three temperatures (17 and 22oC are two typical winter water temperatures, and 27oC is a representative summer water temperature) and four different densities (5, 10, 20 and 30 tadpoles/box). We found that tadpoles metamorphosed earlier and at smaller sizes at 22oC (the higher winter water temperature) than tadpoles raised at either 17oC or 27oC. Tadpoles raised at 27oC exhibited a longer larval period and a smaller metamorphic size than those raised at 22oC. Likewise, under the two winter water temperatures but not the summer water temperature, increased tadpole density enhanced larval growth, translating into greater metamorphic mass without changing time to metamorphosis or decreasing survival rates. Nevertheless tadpoles survived to metamorphosis at 27oC, and at rates equal to those at 17 and 22oC. Our study suggests that lowland tadpoles are better adapted to maturing at cooler, winter water temperatures, and that the summer water temperatures may be stressful to their growth and development. This leads to winter breeding for lowland populations. It also suggests that lowland populations breed at high tadpole densities because high densities benefit the larval growth and development.

摘要The Formosa Bank is a significant zoogeographical barrier for the freshwater fish in Southern Taiwan. Here, we present population genetic structure analyses on Microphysogobio alticorpus populations in Taiwan, and biogeographic pattern to infer the relationship between historic dispersal geological dynamics. A total of 24 haplotypes were genotyped for mitochondrial CR t cyt b region in 134 specimens collected from 9 populations. Relatively high levels of haplotype diversity (h ? 0.896) and low levels of nucleotide diversity (p ? 0.005) were detected in M. alticorpus. Two major phylogenetic haplotype groups, Clade N1tN2 and S, were revealed and estimated to diverge about 0.121 myr (million years) ago. Haplotype network and population genetic analyses indicated significant genetic structure (FST ? 0.876), largely concordant with the geographical location of the populations. According to SAMOVA analysis, M. alticorpus populations were divided into five units that can be explained by episodes of dispersal and population expansion followed by population fragmentation and restricted gene flow. The results of the topological pattern and network suggested that the Kaoping River was the first habitat colonized by the ancestor of M. alticorpus, before the northward dispersal.
